What does ETF mean – ETF concept
ETFs are groups of assets that are traded on an exchange. A single ETF can give you financial exposure to hundreds of different stocks or more than a dozen different commodities. ETFs have become a very popular alternative to mutual funds and investment funds. How do you buy an ETF? They can be traded in the same way as stocks and can be purchased through most Hungarian stock brokerage firms.
Different types of ETFs
ETFs can contain many different types of assets, in a variety of combinations. Let’s take a closer look at the most popular Hungarian ETF types.
ETF shares
ETFs are, as the name suggests, collections of stocks. When you buy a stock ETF, it’s almost the same as buying stocks – except you’re buying a lot of different stocks at once.
There are many types of stock ETFs.
Index ETFs track major stock market indices, such as the FTSE 100 or AIM 50. They contain the same blue chip stocks, so changes in the ETF’s value reflect changes in the broader market.
Dividend ETFs invest primarily in dividend-paying stocks. The value of these ETFs may not change much over time, but you can earn a return from the dividends paid by all the companies held by the fund.
Industry ETFs provide exposure to a specific selection of stocks in a specific market sector. For example, industry ETFs allow you to trade pharmaceutical stocks, oil stocks, or cannabis stocks.
There are many other types of ETFs. Some focus on growth stocks, while others look for undervalued stocks. If you want to trade penny stocks, there are ETFs for that too.
Bond ETFs
Bond ETFs are bundles of bonds. Often, these ETFs offer returns derived from the bonds they hold. However, the value of bond ETFs can move up or down as interest rates and bond prices change.
Commodity ETFs
Commodity ETFs provide exposure to a number of commodities at once, such as sugar, coffee, and oil . Trading commodity ETFs is a good way to get into commodities trading if you don’t want to speculate on the price of a specific commodity, but rather on agriculture or energy in general.
Forex ETFs
Forex ETFs typically include currency futures , giving you exposure to a variety of different currency pairs. Trading these ETFs is one way to get into forex trading while avoiding costly currency conversion fees.
What is ETF trading and how does it work?
ETF trading in Hungary is a form of trading that focuses on buying and selling ETFs for profit. This is distinctly different from ETF investing, where it is more typical to buy a fund and hold it for months or years. Many ETF traders engage in day trading or weekly swing trading.
ETF trading is based on the fact that ETF prices change throughout the trading day. However, ETF price movements are somewhat different from stock price movements.
While stock prices are primarily driven by buying and selling, ETF prices are primarily driven by the price movements of the underlying assets they hold. Let’s look at an example of a technology industry ETF portfolio that includes Amazon , Apple , and Facebook (US ETF trading). If the stock prices of all three companies increase by 5%, the value of the ETF will also increase by 5%.
Importantly, because ETFs contain multiple assets, the change in the value of the ETF reflects the average price change of the underlying assets in the package. So, if Amazon rises by 5%, Apple falls by 2%, and Facebook rises by 1%, the value of the ETF will only increase by 1.33%. So when trading ETFs in Hungary, it is critical to consider how market news or events affect all of the assets held by the ETF.
ETF trading fees
Many Hungarian brokers offer commission-free trading of ETFs, although some charge a fee of a few forints for each buy or sell. If you trade ETFs using contracts for difference (ETF CFDs), you can expect to pay spreads of around 0.1% or higher per trade.
There is another cost to ETF trading that doesn’t affect stock traders. ETFs typically have management fees, which can range from as little as 0.01% of your investment per year to 0.5% or more. ETF traders generally don’t need to worry about these fees, as they are very low if you only hold an ETF for a few days.
Benefits of ETF trading
How to trade ETFs? Wondering why you should trade ETFs? ETFs have several advantages that have contributed to the explosive growth in popularity of ETF trading in Hungary.
Advantages of ETFs: they reduce risk
Perhaps the number one reason to buy ETFs is that they provide financial exposure to a wide range of assets in a single trade. This is a big deal because it dramatically reduces the risk of any trade. For example, if you were trading AstraZeneca stock, your trade could be a roller coaster ride in response to news surrounding the company. However, if you were trading a biotechnology ETF instead, any bad news about AstraZeneca would have only a limited impact on the value of your portfolio.
Of course, it works both ways. Good news about the company could send AstraZeneca shares up several percent. But a biotech ETF, in which AstraZeneca is just one of dozens of companies, is unlikely to move in response to the news. ETF trading allows you to greatly reduce your risk, but in return, potentially limits your gains.
Advantages of ETFs: Broad exposure
Another important advantage of Hungarian ETF trading is that by providing exposure to a wide range of assets, you can speculate on entire industries or markets at once. For example, with ETF trading, you can speculate on the entire energy market without having to make multiple, potentially costly trades on several different commodities.
Advantages of ETFs: Easy entry
How do you invest in ETFs? Unlike mutual funds or investment funds, trading ETFs does not require a relationship with a specific broker or money manager. ETFs are traded on an exchange and do not require a minimum investment. In addition, some ETF trading platforms allow you to buy fractional shares of ETFs, so the amount of money you need to start trading is very low.
Advantages of ETFs: High liquidity
Because ETFs are traded on exchanges like the Hungarian Stock Exchange, they tend to have very high liquidity. This is important for ETF trading in Hungary as it means that buying and selling ETFs quickly is not a problem. Even for some of the less popular ETFs, it is easy for your broker to match your trade with someone else who is buying or selling that fund.
Risks of ETF trading
ETF trading is relatively less risky than other types of trading, but that doesn’t mean it’s risk-free. As with any type of trading, there’s always the possibility that the value of your position will decrease. In that case, you may have to close your trade at a loss.
Remember that when you invest in ETFs, i.e. buy and sell through CFD trading with leverage, your risk is higher. Leveraged trading multiplies both your losses and your profits.
ETF strategies
Are you asking yourself: how do I buy an oil ETF? It is important to approach Hungarian ETF trading with a simple strategy. The better your ETF trading strategy, the more likely it is that your trade will bring you consistent profits. So let’s look at the three most popular trading strategies that you can start using today:
1. ETF Strategy: Momentum ETF Trading
Momentum ETF trading involves buying and selling ETFs that are moving strongly in one direction. ETFs often gain momentum due to excitement about (or disillusionment with) the market sectors they represent. For example, if the technology sector is soaring, the price of technology ETFs can jump dramatically in a matter of days.
The goal of momentum trading is simply to ride the wave. Instead of trying to time the market perfectly, exit your position as soon as momentum shows signs of running out. These signals can come from lower trading volume or in the form of a trading signal from a momentum indicator such as the moving average convergence divergence (MACD).
2. ETF Strategy: Overbought and Oversold ETF Trading
Another simple but effective trading strategy is to watch for buy and sell levels. These levels can be determined using a technical indicator such as the relative strength index (RSI).
The key to this type of trading is timing. Don’t buy an ETF as soon as it becomes overbought. Instead, wait for it to make a strong turn and enter a bull position. It’s better to miss out on a small increase than to risk the ETF continuing to fall without a turn.
3. ETF Strategy: Range-bound ETF Trading
ETFs sometimes bounce back and forth between support and resistance price levels. This presents an opportunity to trade ETFs, as you can buy and sell movements between these price levels. However, be careful when trading around support and resistance levels, as a breakout is likely to occur sooner or later. When this happens, the price movement can be rapid and powerful.
Tips for Hungarian ETF trading
Getting started with Hungarian ETF trading is easy, but mastering the art of trading takes time and practice. To help you progress, here are five of our favorite tips:
#1. Take a course
How to invest in oil ETFs? This guide is a great starting point for learning about ETF trading in Hungary. However, if you want practical help and ETF trading strategy advice, we recommend taking a course. There are plenty of online courses offered by professional ETF traders and even the best ETF brokers.
#2. Start with an ETF trading book
Reading an ETF trading book is another way to learn more about the ins and outs of ETF trading in Hungary. Two of our favorites are ” Trading ETFs: Gaining an Edge with Technical Analysis ” by Deron Wagner and ” A Practical Guide to ETF Trading Systems ” by Anthony Garner.
#3. Study an industry
Are you wondering how to invest in ETFs? If you are just starting out in ETF trading, it is a good idea to focus on a single industry or market sector. The more you know about a given market, the better you will be able to create an ETF trading strategy and the better you will understand how prices move in that market. Only once you have mastered that market should you move on to another one.
#4. Learn to use stop losses
Stop losses play a key role in ETF trading. They prevent losses from growing when a trade goes wrong and protect hard-earned profits from other trades. We recommend placing a stop loss on every ETF trade.
#5. Be patient.
ETF trading requires a significant amount of patience. If there is no trading opportunity that fits your strategy, don’t force it. It is better to miss a day of trading than to jump into a trade and lose money.
The best ETF trading platforms
A legjobb ETF kereskedés platform kiválasztása nagy szerepet játszik a kereskedésben.
